Looking for any help please. Purchased 8-9 years ago in an antique mall, cause she needed a home. Well, now she REALLY needs a home. Someone elses :joyful: Poor gal is just sitting in inventory shelving.

I always wondered if she belonged on a vintage TV lamp once? Thoughts? She also has a 'mission/religious' look to her. She measures a quaint 6 1/4'' tall.

    Any direction would be great.

    Thank you, Cory

What does it say on the back?

I'd think most nuns etc wouldn't wear a corset with their chests popping out but what do I know?;)

Well, what do you know. She has writing on her back. Perhaps I shouldn't stop drinking coffee at 10. Or start drinking Margaritas earlier.

    Thanks!!

Looks more like a folk costume from southern Italy to me. (Headdress very distinctive.)

I'm wondering if it's from a hobbyist ceramics mold.

I was wondering about home hobbyist, too, but I think I see USA at the end of the impressed name.

You're right, that was my first thought. The folded headdress and the bodice are typically Italian, but worn mostly in northern and central Italy.
The headdress was also introduced to a small area in Calabria (south) by refugees from Val D'Aosta in the north.

I really appreciate all of the input on this piece -- thank you. I did attempt to figure out the name on the back, but to no avail. The closest thing that makes sense is the J. Anderson/Andersen mentioned above. I don't think it says USA at the end, but could be wrong as the glaze above the signature is thick.

Now that Anderson was mentioned, it does look like that.

There is an Andersen pottery studio in Maine - or there was. Some of the work goes for high prices.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Wasn't the Anderson Pottery in Maine mostly birds, seagulls, seals and the like????? At least the one I'm thinking of........and, yes, they WERE pricey!!!!!

Yes, they were. I suppose they wouldn't have broken out in sitting women.

When I first saw the image, I thought it would be easy to identify.
I was wrong. To be clear, we're saying it's pottery and not ceraminc. I cannot be certain based on the pictures.
    Sorry,
    Kevin

Well, ceramic is the broad term for anything made of clay.

It is, from the Greek word κεραμός (keramos), which means potter's clay or pot.

Sorry for the confusion. When I use the word "ceramic" in this case, I'm referring to plaster. When I use the word pottery, I'm referring to molding clay. Maybe only a few like me will use this as a distinction. It sounds better calling an object ceramic instead of "plastered."
If it's plaster, then it was probably made at a home dwelling (maybe a company) and we're looking at an artist signature.
If it's clay, then it could be the name of the company or an artist. This will have an impact on the research.

She is asleep, she will only notice if she wakes up, but I don't think she ever will.
