Small Silver/Glass Container... What is this?

Discussion in 'Silver' started by Larry Alexander, Jun 19, 2017.

  1. I forgot to put in a size reference, it's the size of a typical shot glass... may be just that. It's 34mm tall. Weighs 68g with the glass.

  3. Interesting, that must be it. I wonder why it's often blue glass? Also just found out it's called a "salt pot". It's also for mustard as well, I guess mustard and silver don't mix either. (often a remedy to clean silver coins though I don't recommend it.)

I've always called them salt cellars. But yes, for holding salt.

You're right to, that's the proper name for them.

I get bloody confused when people call them 'salts'. To me they're salt-cellars and nothing else. Salt is what you put into them.

Don`t get too bloody confused because that is their correct name, they are Salts or Open Salts, that is what they have been called for centuries, it is what the trade calls them , auction houses call them and reputable antique guides too.

    Salts.

Trade, auction houses and antique guides use both terms for both the open salt 'dishes' and the closed salt dispensers. So salt and salt cellar are both correct. Here is an example of a site that uses both terms for both items:

Complicated, I know, but this is even more complicated, Cellini's famous salt cellar:

We are talking about blue glass lined silver salts here, shangas is hardly going to come across a monstrosity like that in the Op Shops of Victoria :D

You've been to Oz, have you seen Flinders Street station? Ok, more demure, and not for sale, but still...;)

Don't be so sure about that, Davy. The last monstrosity I saw in an op shop was a solid silver goblet for $300.00. Not that I bought it, but still...
