1880's Brass Tube Part Thing

Part of something. Has patent dates of june 1st 1880 and june 21st 1881. Doesn't really do much as it is. Rod pulls and pushes plunger. I thought the different sized holes at the top were interesting. Any ideas? Probably obvious to someone.

 

Looks like a sausage stuffer.

 

It kinda does, but it doesn't really open up easily to fill, and I think the holes on the top would make things a bit messy.

 

It's part of a Victorian Time Machine, but I cannot explain more without breaking my oath of secrecy to the 'Inventions Supressed for the Good of Humanity Club'

 

It was certainly made to be seen with that casting design.
My first reaction was....
That it had something to do with an overhead tank for a toilet.
The holes surely question this unless they are a vacuum breaker.

 

I'd take it apart and clean it to within an inch of it's life, polish the brass, oil the wood......and stand back .....cuz the more I look at it the nicer it gets....
It also looks like the type of thing that is missing a piece or two...

I dug it out of storage recently and decided to have another go at figuring it out.

 

Could not see specifically what it is ? Can you tell us ? I found an interesting Still for alcohol with that patent date .

air pump for diving ? Air pump for firefighting smoke helmet ?

 

Ah ! never would have guessed! Now there is something they could have made to also pump air for my above purposes !!!

 

A 4 year thread - that's a first for me to be still around - LOL!
But really, don't back up to that hydraulik pump unless you're desperate!
