Featured Sad victorian ? bog oak ? mourning locket pendant

had this arrive this morn, picked it up off ebay for a couple of quid

it was well described but the picture the lady took of it was way to zoomed in so took away its cuteness

measures 4cm by 3 cm

it was all loose inside, but just needed to be set back in the correct way

any idea what the hole on front was might have been for ?, presuming there was something set in there

any thoughts appreciated

 

It looks like vulcanite, that fades to brown when exposed to light for a long time.
I don't know what would have been in the hole, but it would have been part of the picture. Maybe carved willow branches?

 

i like your thinking, that makes supa dupa sense. must have definetly been some sort of tree top covering

 

Was thinking it's missing the top of a tree.

 

yeah defo, as the tree top would have given it an overall oval type shape

its going in my projects department

 

That was my thinking too, the top of a willow tree, a symbol of mourning.
