What size is this shell casing & is it Chinese or ?

This item is way out of my wheel house, so I am hoping someone here can help.

It is 6 1/2" tall, 1 1/2" across the top opening & 2 1/16" across the bottom. I have tried to show all of the marks on the bottom which appear to be a mixture of numbers & Asian characters.



Thanks for any & all advice or opinions!!!

 

Looks to be for Spring to handle.
Seems small for a mortar.
Maybe a 'Salute gun'?

It came in a box of assorted stuff that included some B&W photos from February 1940 that I was told were taken in London. Once I get them to lay flat I am going to hopefully get some help from our members across the pond.

 

It is one of many variants of Japanese 37mm cannon cartridge case. If you take accurate measurements and match them to the data on this site, you will learn exactly which weapon used this ammunition. The "11" in the headstamp may mean it was for the "11th year"-designated weapon named on the site, but match the measurements to be more certain.

I think this is dated 15 Showa (1940) on both marks. Perhaps 7 and 11 refer to month?

There's also a character there that's a bit distorted, but it looks like it could represent Tokyo or possibly Kyoto.

 

OP's measurements pretty much match those given at my link for both the type 98 or 100 Tank cannon and the type 94 Anti-tank cannon.

37mm cannon ammunition is better-researched than about any other caliber, thanks to a book by a friend of mine, Robert Mellichamp, that's now up to several volumes.

It measures out for both the type 98 or 100 Tank cannon and the type 94 Anti-tank cannon.

So using khl's dating for this piece I can date it to be Japanese WWII era.
