Advice needed for old house full of stuff

I'm working on a house that was owned by a hoarder who passed away. There's a lot of pottery and glassware. How do you quickly figure out what's worth trying to sell or donate vs trash? The guy I work for who bought the house doesn't care about old stuff and most of what he touches ends up broken. It doesn't help that everything has been haphazardly stored in a basement. Most is wrapped in newspaper and put in boxes. The boxes have deteriorated due to age and moisture.

I'm not into most glass or pottery, but hate to see anything special get trashed. I looked at a few pottery pieces and most are marked. Some England, France and Japan. What are some guidelines for selecting stuff to carefully put aside. This will be done on my own time and I won't know until the last minute when the order comes to clear out the basement. I'd guess there's at least 1000 pieces or more there.

I did notice some of it looks well used with parts of the gold finish worn away.

There are none. Items can look valuable and aren't, others can look like nothing much and are valuable.

No fast sure way to know. Most of us have pent years with glass and books and some items still un ID. You might try cruising eBay sold for glass to get a feel for the market.

 

Ditto for pottery and porcelain. Years of staring, handling and studying hardly seems to scratch the surface of understanding. About the only thing I can say, as a generalization, is that condition usually matters unless something is rather old or rather rare in which case the market may be more forgiving.
