And by the way.... 'fine' was perfect for Memorial day is NOT a happy day. :(

I Think you *may* slip the wire opposite to the bend - the bend (that lays on the back surface) keeps the earrings from hinging back and forth on the wire. Maybe adds more tension?

Have no idea why it's a butterfly

A Pro will know + new tag line :)

They're wingbacks. It was a style of back used for a while in the 50s. They stayed on your ears quite nicely, but no one knew how to get them on without a demonstration!

Now I see. So these were likely just stepped on. Thank you!

When I straightened them out I see they're stamped "WINGBACK PAT. 2414382" on the sides of the pins

So she invented them!? Cool - they don't go thru the ears, the wing fits inside the ear, and the wire goes behind it... 40s

There were a bunch of new designs after WWII, not many of which lasted. Monet clips have, but they're the exceptions. The clips with the springs in them HURT sooner or later, but some of the tension backs of assorted designs don't.

Conchos for a hatband? Maybe too small.

I would say that they are belt decorations.
Certainly not fish hooks for earrings.
