First is Chinese. Appears to be reasonable quality and with some age (would think first half of 20th century). Second, I am less sure about. Maybe European circa 1880. Would like to see the whole chair from the front.

Thanks. I think my initial analysis correct. There are some elements of the renaissance revival style but doesn't scream so. I am less versed in European furniture than American so perhaps someone else could pin this down a bit better.

UK? A lot of posters here are American, so we don't know your local market worth a bean. I like the Chinese one, however. The Victorian mishmash chair would be lucky to find a buyer here at all, unless someone painted (ack!) the poor thing.

Your hall chair, that second one, is wildly out of fashion, sadly. Looks like classic North of England country furniture. I think £20 is a bit low, you might get £40 at auction, but you'd have fees, of course. That would take it to £30 - see if you can push it to that. If you look on Ebay UK under hall chairs, you'll get a good idea of what I'm on about.

On the Chinese one, I'd email a couple of the better auction houses or look for a specialist dealer in Chinese furniture.

This bloke isn't that far from you, relatively: http://www.antiques-atlas.com/antique/chinese_huanghuali_chair/as178a1934

A dealer will typically offer you a quarter of retail, but that's still more than £20!

Ah, well that makes it much more interesting. Might even be worth seeing if the big boys have got an Asian sale coming up.
