In theory I agree but other reputable boards have stated that they will take pieces in, will not authenticate and have returned fake watches broken. My own experience was in the 80s when I took my watch in for a battery. The woman in front of me was obnoxious and really rude to the associate. The associate took her watch in back and came back returning the watch and loudly saying that they only work on their own watches lol but she did give it back.

LOL it probably is the best advice but Cartier is known for never authenticating even when they take pieces in. There are always exceptions.

Hermes won’t authenticate either but when I brought in an ebay bought bag along with another Hermes bag for $500 worth of repair on my other bag I asked my SA if the new purchase was good and she replied “you know I can’t authenticate but I was so sorry when we discontinued that color as I loved it-wink wink”. Agree fine to try and please post back as many will benefit knowing if Trinity pieces did exist in 14K and that stamp existed.

You are right. It definitely is a group effort.

Know that isn’t true. They will take in any piece left and will then advise the owner after of cost and whether they can work on the piece. Again, I think they give back counterfeits but I’m not sure. I’ve been told that fake watches have been broken when returned. I keep thinking about this piece and agree that the NY part would make no sense on a fake but again, if it is genuine, that stamp and karat was very short lived. Interesting that the one on “live” didn’t sell. If genuine that was really inexpensive for that piece.

I really don't think its legal to confiscate/impound items without having a court order or something equivalent to that. Impounding powers are generally not that wide but i could be wrong.
Even damaging items (even if they are counterfeit) which have been given to them for verification may end them up in more trouble than they would want.

    Hi,
Cartier has always confiscated or destroyed FAKE Cartier stuff. Tiffany just refuses to clean it.

I did get a verification from a reputable source that everything about this piece is authentic. I. ust need to research more on when this stamp was used to gain more knowledge and share it.

I don't understand how Cartier could legally confiscate something that has significant value on its own (the 14k gold)?
I wouldn't be surprised that they may, however, destroy the Cartier mark on the piece.

Interesting thread. There are so many types of people out there, including those who honestly have come across an item/items (whatever it/they may be) - I'm including myself - and have no idea how to authenticate them. It could be from an inheritance, secondary market, gift, etc. I've learned to reach far and wide to experts (including ebay and Facebook specialty groups) to get information on how to self-authenticate. It's disheartening to know items can be confiscated or destroyed when the inquiry is innocent. Still sitting on last two boxes of stuff (primarily jewelry) that just seem overwhelming.

And, I ditto the "best" comment by Debra. If it wasn't for the multiple opinions and suggestions from this group, I'd be sitting on 15 boxes, not two.

I'll be back soon with another of my own questions. Have a great and safe day!

I think I’d still send a photo to Sotheby’s which will authenticate and give a value if they’re interested which they will be in my opinion if genuine. I can’t think of any downside to doing that.

It was a colleague of mine at an auction house that I reached out to. But yes, that is good advice. It still didn't answer all my questions but I will keep researching.

Interesting to me that Cartier’s 14K work is virtually unknown. Out of curiosity I called a
friend who was a boutique manager in the 80s. His reply was “Cartier only works in 18k” and I replied “Looks like there were pieces done for NY around the 50s in 14”. He was shocked and we’re talking about someone who worked for them for years! Keep us posted!

Thats why I suggested the fine jewelry dept at Sotheby’s but any estimate is still subject to physical inspection but they’ll definitely have experience with this period of 14k production. Apologies from me as I’m another one who thinks they have some Cartier knowledge, wears the brand and had no clue. Also no clue f that stamp was faked but agree with Debora prob not.

Counterfeiters are usually not that bright. I've seen some pretty dumb things in jewelry with fake marks. One of the dumbest was a sterling ring plated in 14k and there were six 14k stamps inside the shank. Like that would really make it so...

I’ve seen really dumb too but I’ve also seen brilliant counterfeits.
