I just picked up this painting that I believe is signed by the name "Baumann". Beneath the signature is what I think is a date starting with 18XX and the rest is faded so I can't read it. I may be wrong too. Seems very old and what I believe is an oil painting. The size is about 10 inches in height and 16 inches in length. I'll attach some photos and hope someone can shed some light. Thanks so much.

Nice painting. Can't make much of the date but the back looks as it could be 19th century. The frame is obviously newer. There are a lot of listed artists named Baumann so pinning this to one will be difficult without additional information.

Yeah I tried myself but it's very difficult. Really could only find 2 artists in that period that painted with that last name. Unfortunately this painting isn't in their style so no luck in pinning it. I'll keep doing research. I do like the painting a lot though. Picked it up for $10. So not a major loss there. I'm guessing it's worth at least the $10 I paid haha

    I wish I'd bought it for $10.

Thrift store find! I wonder what something even generic like this would fetch at auction or retail, keeping in mind it isn't a well received painter.

It is the kind of painting I would research thoroughly before doing anything. After that, if still in the dark as to artist, I generally put something like this on ebay for $99.00-$149.00 with free shipping and hope it goes for more. If it doesn't sell, I either offer it for less in my brick and mortar or put it back on ebay with a higher BIN with best offer. Ebay is generally a better market for me than local retail or local auction. Your options might be different than mine.

Well auction is hit or miss out here as well. I live in Los Angeles. I usually just collect pieces of art, antiques and collectables that appeal to me. Never really for selling, this is a cool painting but just doesn't match my overall style of art at home. So I would like to sell this, and eBay is fine, I would just have no idea how I would go about selling it on eBay. Just as an unknown artist in an unknown time period haha.

With doing more research I did find an artist named G H Baumann that signs his work very similarly. I only found one piece by him and couldn't find any information. He painted during the 19th century so that checks out, but his painting style on the painting I found isn't exactly like mine. He also signed his other painting as G H Baumann and dated beneath it, but mine isn't signed with the "G H" before Baumann, but mine is also dated beneath it (from what I believe I can make out) so that checks out. His other painting is signed on the lower left with name and date, and on the lower right side is the name of the painting. Mine only has the signature on the bottom left. Judging by the way he writes his name, I'm fairly confident its him. My painting is an oil on canvas and the other painting I found is a watercolor, so I'm not sure how common it was for artists to switch material like that. That painting sold somewhere in the $40 range on a strange low-traffic auction site. Ill add photos of the painting I found from him and if you'd like you can compare the two and see if you note any similarities in painting style. I will also put the two signatues together to see if anyone feels there is similarity to that as well. Thanks so much guys.

Here are the 2 signatures side by side.

I'm not, I am in Los Angeles. That picture from that college was one of his paintings that sold in auction. Somehow, if he is from there, one of his paintings made its way to Los Angeles and into my hands. That being if that college painting is the same gentleman that painted my painting.

All I can say is the signatures aren't dissimilar. Yours looks like it needs a good cleaning. And what -- do you think -- is that tall structure in background? A lighthouse?

Haha I know. But I was talking about the original photo I posted of the boats in the water.

Yes, so was I. Did you not notice the tall structure to the right on the shore in the background? Lighthouse? Smokestack? Church steeple? Wireless tower? (The other Baumann piece is a work done by a student at the technical college, likely studying architecture.)

Ahh I didn't notice that actually. My apologies. So the other painting being by a student, do you mean that a student named Baumann did the painting, or did you mean he did a painting after Baumann? Thank you.

Well, from the way it's captioned, it does appear to be a class assignment by a student named Baumann.
