If I remember Taupou's lessons, the fringe would indicate non-native origin; possibly a Chimayo weaving from Mexico.
But I am not a rug expert by any stretch of the imagination.

Right, it's a Chimayo weaving, except Chimayo weavings get their name from the village of Chimayo, which is in New Mexico, not Mexico. They're hispanic, but not Mexican. The weaving is considered part of the Spanish Colonial Art heritage of northern New Mexico.
