IMG_0540.JPG IMG_0541.JPG im getting married this summer and my future MIL gifted us with my future husbands grandmother's couch, which she had reupholstered for us. The upholsterer found a signature on the frame, looks like it was made in 1896 by William Nelson and/or Walter Corey. Seeking info on history of manufacture and what style this couch would be considered.

That writing style is not 1850s. Do you know what the previous upholstery looked like? I'm thinking it was reupholstered some time in the 20th century.

The upholstery in the pic is the brand new upholstery. Previously it had a brown velvet. Upholsterer said she found some remnants of cloth that led her to believe the original upholstery was blue.

Can anyone identify what style this couch would be considered? Also, the only thing I could find about Walter Corey was that he was a chair manufacturer. Anyone have any info on if the business was expanded to couches or if this is a one-of?

A beautiful job with the upholstery. Hopefully someone else will be able to help with the style of couch...

I'm sorry, this is completely off topic, but what is going on with the wall at the right side of the picture? Is the wall cut in a curvy line or am I seeing some kind of reflection or something? Has me intrigued!

I think 1850s or just a tad later is about right. The style is transitional between Empire and Renaissance Revival.

So thoughts on the signature and date in the frame? Am I reading the numbers incorrectly or could that be from the first time it was reupholstered?

That's an old corner bookshelf that I picked up at a yard sale years ago! I'll take a pic when I get home tonight and post.

For some reason can't enlarge these photos, but now I see it! It was like an optical illusion -once you see it, you always see it, lol!

Love the couch. It is really an handsome piece.

Perhaps the 1896 date was an earlier re-upholstery job?

As promised, here's a pic of the corner shelf. A little wonky and weird, but I love it! FullSizeRender.jpg

Thank you all so much for your feedback and complements and congratulations!

2nd marriage for both of us. I've been collecting antique furniture and miscellany for years, so I'm thrilled to be able to have something that he has fond childhood memories of to round out my otherwise fully furnished house! Because the inflatable Star Trek chair really doesn't blend in well.
