Is painting of nude, middle age white woman by listed African American artist Sophie Coors?

I asked my friend who is the manager of a thrift store here in Miami if I could go look in back at the stack of paintings they had but had not yet brought out & he agreed. I ended up getting some cool pieces including a vintage Dr. Pepper mirror sign and this painting.
At first I looked at it & went on to the next one (my first thought was it was by a week end artist) but when I turned it to move it I saw the name Sophie Coors & her address and phone number in Memphis TN. in big letters on the back of the canvas, so I took out my phone & googled her name - and found that Sophie Coors was a well known (1 of her paintings was on Invaluable online auctions with a $800 - $1,200 estimate), listed African American artist from Memphis named Sophie Coors!

Is this by her? Could this be folk art?

On the edge of the frame on back it also says The River Menan, Bangkok Thailand - and then her address & phone number again? Is/was that a gallery?

Any thoughts on what I found today would be greatly appreciated.

This is the artist, so if this is hers this was painted In 2000 just 3 years before she died. I am a bit confused though as the back says 1982?

 

maybe the frame was used before for something to do with the Thailand note above it?

 

Maybe except the subject appears to be on Indonesian furniture, by a river with palms, and draped in a pareo. Curious for sure.

 

Menam is the old Dutch name for the Chao Phraya, the main river of Thailand. Menam is a Dutchification of 'Mae Nam' which means 'mother water'. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) used to have a trading post on the Chao Praya/Menam. Which brings us back to a Dutch colonial style bench from Indonesia.
The lady has been out in the tropical sun for too long, but she doesn't seem too bothered by it.

 

So it’s a potentially African American painting of an Anglo Odalisque in Thailand? That’s gotta be a first...

This Sophie Coors? It seems unlikely this work by the same artist. And the signatures don't match.

I saw those too and agree. The dates on the frame vs. painting are also problematic but IMO the first thing journey needs to do is to check out the clearly given artist address to see if it actually was the address of the listed Sophie although everything else points against it.

 

The number is listed as a Giles Coors so still in the family. Give a call and you may be able to get all the info you need.

 

Maybe Sophie Coors owned it at some stage.

 

Blowing up the sig I think I see underpainting-can’t really tell but it doesn’t look like the sig was painted directly over the ground. Can you all take a look too?

 

Perhaps a portrait done from a photograph of the subject, taken in 1982 Bangkok?

Personally not seeing a problem with the signature, from what can be found online, she appeared to sign in various ways, but appearing to be from the same hand...

I hope journeymagazine follows through with the address and phone and posts the results. I’m well aware of how the aging process can change the hand but IMO there’s a finesse, fluidity and sophistication in all the other examples that is not shown in this work (which I personally like BTW) so I can’t help but question that it’s the same hand. I’m intrigued.

I think signatures front & back of journey's painting are consistent. Sometimes she writes in a more cursive manner than at others. The date discrepancy could be that the painting is from a photo or drawing made in Thailand in 1982 but painted in 2000, when, I note, she turned the P in Sophie into the symbol for Venus/female, so may have thought of herself as a feminist painter in her later years.

There is a white school marm in the painting of the children learning to read. She doesn't seem to have anything against white women.

 

If it’s the same painter then IMO aging took a great toll but the fact that she obviously painted white women has nothing to do with the many stylistic differences.

 

Agree that attempting to contact family is an obvious step - but regarding her hand (and lacking a portrait for comparison), should keep in mind that in 2000, she was three years into her battle with Parkinson's...
