Ah, stollen. In the UK we have a brilliant German supermarket chain called Lidl. Their stollen is wonderful, especially the apple filled. The lebkuchen is pretty fine, too.

I can buy those gooey Chinese and Malay cakes locally, we've a HUGE Oriental store. Oh, and Portugguese pasteis for which I have a passion.

Okay - you can all stop talking about FFs (Fabulous Foods) now................since almost housebound I exist on what I can get at the local market. Here I am in one of the most culinary diverse cities in the US and I am eating toasted Bimbo white bread with oleo.................;);)

oh, for some salted Dutch licorice.........or stollen............or canolli.............hell, a Fig Newton would do nicely with my tea right now!

    Hi Mansons,
Now you have made me hungry. A slice of my Great Gram's stollen is waiting for me somewhere. Being from Alsace she learned the French way and the German way.
Her stollen always took two entire days and if you tried to disturb her in those two days God help you. I remember once she chased my grandfather smacking him with a broom until the handle broke, THEN she really got angry.:rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage:

Can't say I blame her! I've never had an apple stollen, but then there are as many varieties of Stollen as there are towns to bake it in.

Apple stollen is yummy. Filled with sharp cooked apples, with some raisins in the dough. I like it better than the marzipan type. Lidl also do little stollen pieces, full of spice and mixed fruit.

Spice in stollen? That sounds...odd. Old school lebkuchen maybe. That often contained candied fruit.

Am I the only one who thinks it's hilarious that this thread has gone from antique silverware to regional comfort-foods in two pages?? :p

Like stollen! Those bites look...odd. The real deal is a yeast bread. Those look like marzipan-filled cookies. As the gentleman said "German junk food", but I'll bet they taste good.

They are scrummy, believe me, especially with a good cup of coffee.

The real stuff certainly is, especially sliced and toasted. It wouldn't toast well if filled, but you'll just have to suffer.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

My parents had some German friends whom we were close with growing up.....he always made Stollen around Christmas.....as he became elderly and no longer made the bread, he gave me the recipe (I was THRILLED as I could never get enough of it and begged him for year for the recipe to which he ALWAYS declined!!!) and I try to make about 15-18 loaves every year......sometimes I manage to.... sometimes I don't.....but I have a bunch of disappointed people when I don't!!!!!

@Jesse5292, Hi, and WELCOME!!!! I'm not sure you got an answer to your question. There are several of us who can answer your question! At the very top of the page....in the dark brown bar across near the top where it says "HOME, FORUMS, GALLERY and MEMBERS" click on FORUMS.....On the page it takes you to, click on either "Forums" or "Antique Forums".......on the next page decide which area your subject and pictures best fit into to start a THREAD.....then you can write your text and post your images.......I set the below up hoping it can help.....my first line is repetitive....sorry.....GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Be they ever so oddly shaped, they are stollen. What else would one do with stollen?
