Painting by unknown painter in 1892

A new buy this painting in rough condition . Can't figure out the name so need some help thanks

 

I can see why you bought it, condition aside it is a beautiful painting.
Haven't figured out the name, but below the signature it says Dieppe (France).
Dieppe harbour today, pretty much the same outline:

I think so, what I can see of the name looks French. Looks like the last part is -vaille, -vielle.
But Dieppe was also popular with English painters, here is a gorgeous Turner:

Hopefully someone can work some magic on the signature. Aquitaine is a wonderful siggy enhancer.

 

F...niella? Maybe Italian?
Could be an amateur, but it is a great painting.

 

I think you have a place name F (something) ville and a date - 1892 - with the artist below.

 

The place name is below, it is Dieppe, and the harbour of Dieppe. The name with F....vi-lle is the painter's name.
But French place names can also be surnames, just like in many other countries. So F....vi-lle could be both the painter's name and the name of a town somewhere in France. Just not this town, because it is Dieppe.

 

I see F, "a or u", "i or e", s, niolle.
Didn't have any luck finding a name though.

 

I keep seeing Fiersviolle, but that isn't any name. Maybe a lead for someone else, though.
My brain makes it into Fontvieille, but that is just because I like Fontvieille (in Provence).

 

I have been looking a lot now this afternoon but still no results Even searching with google in a reverse search on the painting but nothing yet

I spent some time on this this morning but came up blank. For what it is worth, I see Fursvielle.

 

Found the name on a other art forum and now only need to find some art from this painter off course to compare His name is Ulrich de Fonvielle and here's what came up on the forum :

Signed Fonvielle 1892 and inscribed Dieppe.
The author of this painting was a painter but is mainly known for his romantic life as a journalist.Ulrich de Fonvielle was born in Paris on february 11.1833. He was the brother of Wilfrid de Fonvielle and Arthur de Fonvielle, both journalist and, for Wilfrid, a important aventurer in aeronautics. Ulrich, in spite of his studies in painting begun his experience in an algerian newspaper of the opposition, funded by his brother Arthur l'Algerie Nouvelle, which was forbidden after a number of condemnations. Ulrich changed the pen for the gun and joined Garibaldi under the orders of the french colonel Cluseret and was soon rewarded as an officer and a military valor medall. By the time, he sent articles and drawings to the newspaper L'Illustration. Then he came back in France and reported his war experiences in a set of articles and finally in a book : "Les chemises rouges" (The red shirts). But as an adventurer he was interested by the Secession war and came in America and met again colonel Cluseret who was a Brigadier Général and Head of the first lines of Général Frémont. Fonvielle served as a topographer in the general staff of the Potomac army and was in Bull Run and Gettysburg. Some of his topographical drawings are in the Fremont library and some other U.S. libraries. He returned in France in 1864 and wrote for a number of newspaper like his Scènes de la vie militaire aux Etats unis- Sketches of the military life in U.S.. but also about other political and science subjects. An article against the french government sent him for two months in jail. He lost his election as a representant of the Rhône in 1870 but the war France/Prussia was here and he had a courageous attitude in some battles. After the war he joined the regular government and as a lieutenant-colonel fight against the revolution ranks of the Commune. Then he worked for some newspapers and mainly was the head of L'Union républicaine in Dieppe. Again he was often sentenced by french justice courts for his publications. He wrote his memoirs and a drama : Populus. He died in july 1911 in Paris.

As a painter, he exhibited landscapes in a number of salons (Paris 1888,1889,1898...). He is quoted as "Ulrich de Fonvielle, artiste peintre" in an issue of the newspaper L'aéronautique in 1894. A google image search "Dieppe cliffs" will show you that your seascape is typical of the shore where Fonvielle lived by.

So my brain was right with wanting it to be Fontvieille, Fonvielle is an older spelling of the same name.
