Most welcome. I've never seen Sorrento Ware in anything but wood. Not saying other Italian makers might not have used ivory, but not those in Sorrento. It's that very distinctive high varnished olive wood stuff.

I would love to know more, do you think this ivory panel was bought as a souvenir just as a panel? It would explain the fantastic art work and the poor craftsmanship of the box (the box isn't that bad but compered to the panel it is) if so what date would you say? my Grand Tour knowledge is nonexistent. I ask about the date because one dealer I know said he thought it came from a french paneled cabinet 17th/18thc

OK, now - this is very weird... I was just typing this: Does anqyone else seputti third from left has Gibson style and features?

    And came across this:

But seriously, that head tilt is very Gibson-y :)

I do indeed think the panel may have been bought on its own as a souvenir, just as cameos were. Hard to date that though, but 18thC would be about right.

It doe's have the same look but I think because of the splitting on the panel my box dates to earlier.

Just keep it in mind... You can never really be sure how and where these things were kept. It's at least 100 years old...

The reference may come in handy, sometime, anyhoo :)
