I purchased this print and have been searching for information on it. I have two artists, Peint Par A. Weisz and Grave Par Paul Girardet. I'm not sure of signatures or numbers due to the back being completely covered up. Would anyone have any information on this print?

Charming. The first name is the artist ("painted by") and the second name is the printer ("engraved by.")

You've got a title (which I can't read in your photograph.) An internet image search is likely to bring your work up.

"Le Petit Cadre" is the title of this piece. I have searched for it with no results but will continue my search until I find something.

    That is so sweet.
Le petit cadre means the little frame. Pretty as a picture.

Thanks Debora. I'll have a professional take a look at the print and remove the backing and/or frame. Even if it were a reproduction, I still love this print

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It appears that the artist's full name was probably Adolphe Weisz. Most sites say he was born in 1838, although some say 1868. I think the former (1838), mainly because I saw some listings for other prints of paintings by Weisz that were engraved by Girardet in the 1870s and 1880s. A couple of sites say that Weisz died in 1914, most just say circa 1900.

I haven't found anything about that particular print, nor the painting on which it is based. Debora did exceptional work in finding the one listing she did!

It appears that Paul Girardet was born in 1821 and died in 1893. It might be good to research him to find when the print originally was issued. If yours is a reproduction, though, it could be from much later.

I love the picture, and like the paintings by Adolphe Weisz that I saw online.

Hum... "Le petit cadre" doesn't look like Adolphe Weisz' work. And he was a Victorian; this is work is much earlier, Rococo.

Could be a different Weisz... I got the idea of the artist's name from this entry from the Library of Congress for a different print engraved by Girardet -- and artist was A. Weisz. They attribute the original to Adolphe Weisz, 1838 - . Of course, their identification of the artist could be incorrect.

Down lower in the entry there are indications that the print was copyrighted. Maybe the register of copyrights may show more?

Hard to argue with the Library of Congress... and you, of course. ;)

Such a different sensibility than the rest of his work. But he did work with period costumes, did use mirrors and frames as props, and modeling of female face similar to that in other works.

    Think you got it.

I like his paintings and would love to see the original of this one. Still wish we could know more about the print itself.

And, the LOC on rare occasions makes mistakes. I make a lot more of them!
