Inherited this piece recently. It's a beautiful piece and I've always loved it but know very little about it. It's 11" tall and 6" wide at the base. I was told it was Edme Samson, late 19th century, valued at approximately $475. I can't tell by the maker's mark...never seen it before. Anyone out there familiar with this mark or maker?

Röntgen's book of marks shows what I think could be yours but not sure, as Dresden Art Publishers, Richard Eckert.

The 2 look significantly different from one another to me, although both ES with a double line through. Thomas' (Welcome, Thomas) is older in style, if not in actual age. Maybe an earlier version?

I would think it’s definitely Eckert

Thanks for all the great info everyone! I inherited several nice pieces and I'm trying to learn more about them and their makers. It's fascinating and I might be hooked. Would love to add to the collection. Also trying to determine if I need anything appraised for insurance purposes.

What an appraiser does: get enough information about an item to be able to describe it accurately; if she has any relevant reference books, check those; check the Internet for additional information; check the Internet for past sale history of similar items; if she has them, check any relevant catalogues from past auctions.

What we do, or help you do, is all of the above except, perhaps, check old auction catalogues. Nothing has an absolute value, only what someone has been willing to pay recently.

Thanks, Bronwen. I'm finding information scarce on a few of my pieces. However, I still love the detail and work that went into them and would never part with those that I inherited. Just need to figure out about insurance value. Maybe I can find a local appraiser. Thanks so much for your help and the info you've shared.
