My name is Jen and i am based in London. I've become interested in Antique and Vintage jewellery (especially gemstones) recently.

I have only been to an antique market once but i didn't buy anything as i didn't know anything. It was a pleasure just looking at those lovely pieces.

I just started to read some online courses and articles to learn a bit more and i have learn quite a bit from reading the posts on this forums already.

I am very glad that i found this forum and i am looking forward to learn more from everyone as you are all more experienced than i am.

    Jen

Hi Jen! Are you interested only in precious stones? I can tell you about Soviet antiques :)

    Hello Jen, welcome.
My favourite, I am sure we'll see a lot of each other. I think your approach is right. In addition, visiting museums, but also charity shops, and everything in between, is a good way to become acquainted with the actual look and feel of things.

I'm sure you can 99, but she's already got her work cut out if she sticks to jewellery for a while.

Indeed! Especially if it continues to be spelled incorrectly!

Welcome, Paleblue. Notwithstanding the fact that most people on the telly -- even on the jewelry channels (!!??), pronounce the word incorrectly...

Drives me nuts -- like the people who order "sherbeRt."

    :)

Isn't that what is referred to as English-speaking nations being 'divided by a common language'?;)

Elevators/lifts, parking lots/car parks, first floor/ground floor -- that's the division by common language. Spelling...not so much.

Although, if Anyone can figure out "colonel," DO let me know!!

Weren't North American spelling and British spelling standardized at different times, using different standards? It is not just jewellery/jewelry, but also grey/gray, colour/color, etc.
In Dutch there are also different spelling standards, no one makes a fuss when they read Sri Lankan Burgher Dutch, for instance. We just accept that language in different parts of the world has gone through different developments. Those not only lead to different words, but also different spelling. We embrace a dying form of Indonesian Dutch called Petjok (Petjoh). And we even make an effort to understand Afrikaans;).

And after all, whether a necklace is classed as jewelry or jewellery doesn't affect its beauty, does it. It just shows in which part of the world the description was written.

But you could always start a campaign for a language union between Britain, the US, and Canada. The Dutch have that with the Flemish (in Belgium, not yet in France), and I hear the Malaysians, Singaporeans and Indonesians are also considering one.

The 'Jewellery' spelling looks right to me, born and raised in England, where the English language was first formed. When I moved to Canada I thought you lot were spelling it wrong, I enjoy the mixture of Nationalities on this board, great group of people .. :) Joy.

Since the common language is causing problems, I propose we just switch to the Dutch word 'sieraden' for jewel(le)ry;). I for one have no problems with that:D:D:hilarious::hilarious:
    Other suggestions:
    Kleuren for colo(u)rs.
    Grijs for grey/gray.
    Centrum for centre/center.

So Jen, we'd love to see your sieraden:).

Or even jewelry:). I'm sure it will be beautiful in any language or spelling.
