Any advice on getting into a combination brief case?

One of my relatives has been researching on ancestry and asked another elderly relative if they had any information relating to the ship his parents arrived on. He has it stored inside a brief case with a combination but he can't remember what the combination was. Is there anyway to get into this without having to destroy the case? He's obsessing over this so I would like to resolve it, hopefully, without destroying his case.

    Take it to a locksmith.
There are Youtube videos on how to open briefcases with combination locks on them if you want to try.

I know this sounds ridiculous but try
    1 2 3 4 (if 4 digits)
My dad and I found an old case in his garage and tried that combination and it worked, lol.
Good luck, I'm sure this won't be your combination but I just had to let you know it worked for me.:)

    Thankfully, Komo, no cuffs involved.

Maybe try house number, SSN (portion that fits) or phone number

I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier... one of my "hobbies" is getting into briefcases and picking locks (mine of course):shame:. I can't tell you exactly how to do it because each type and brand of briefcase usually have different methods of opening. The first way I always try is putting pressure on the opening mechanism (if there are buttons that need to be pushed in to open the briefcase then push them in) and one by one starting at the first dial slowly rotate it and listen; when the number is correct it should make an audible clicking noise and should feel different. Repeat this on each dial. This will not work on expensive briefcases. If this doesn't work try looking up how to crack the specific type of case you have.:)

    Hi,
I do the same thing in opening peoples garage door locks. People are so surprised that I can open their garage without knowing the code. If it is new I have to guess but an older one look for worn numbers or discolored ones.

Success! Thank you!! I used a YouTube video that showed how to go through all the possible combinations. About half way through that process we found it. Unfortunately, what he was looking for was not in there. Now he's obsessing over where it could be. We did find old valentines day cards from the love of his life so that made him smile. A lot.

This was the video I used just in case someone else may find the need to break into something.

I am SO glad you returned to tell us you cracked the code. I would have fixated on the problem, and then dreamed answers all night!

Hopefully, we will eventually find it . He really was giddy over those old valentines so it was still worth the effort.
