    Looks to be a Victorian clock case that has been repurposed.

    Definitely a clock case and a mantel clock at that. I collect British and European clocks but I do not recognise this particular style (I know nothing about American clocks). Sometimes those "carved" bits are not actually wood but an early type of plastic (celluloid). If you try to clean the case with any type of solvent be very careful. Celluloid dissolves in alcohol and other solvents.

    Given works are long missing, it does make an attractive display case.

    American walnut clock case ca. 1870-80. It may have been used by more than one clock company.
