Can anyone tell me if this is 30's bakelite or 50s plastic?
Little box is 3 1/2" square.

It reminds me of the GEM cases for card packs of the same era, which were black bakelite - is that brown? Or black?

It is dark brown, and the horse is a copper color.

    I did find this though..

    Hickok
    - 1909 - 1970's
Hickok was one of many companies that specialized in men's jewelry and accessories. Much of it was art deco or mid century modern in design. The earlier pieces were marketed in beautiful bakelite and plastic boxes which will be marked Hickok on the bottom with the company crest.

Ah, but you're right. Plastic 1950s according to others. Hum...

Dante did something similar, making Incolay cameo cuff links that were taken from engraved gems, sold in boxes with a wooden body & an Incolay lid that also had a classical motif. The boxes turn up for sale without the contents, so these were another twofer. This would have been in the 60s.

Good sleuthing work, Debora, thanks! Is good to see the examples from the original ad. Wish they'd have shown a horse box, but I feel very comfortable to say it's bakelitey alrighty!
