Do You Think These 2 Pieces were Done by Pickard

I found these at an on line auction. The consignor was a collector of porcelain and ceramics. Had some very nice pieces. Problem is that she had all the info about her collection written in a book and couldn't find the book. So I was wondering if these 2 are by Pickard.

The first is a plate, 8 5/8" in diameter, marked PM Bavaria. It has a Pickard-ish look to me so wanted to check.

The 2nd item is a vase in a shape that Pickard used extensively. It has a signature, but not very knowledgable about Pickard so don't know if it's genuine. Measures 8" high. Not marked on the bottom. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

The Bavaria mark is supposedly an export mark used between 1904 - 1938.
Another site has between 1895 - 1910. Check out porcelainmarksandmore.com

That might track with Pickard. They were in the Chicago area and decorated white blanks from different manufacturers.

    Hi Pam,
I usually associate Pickard with more gold encrusted pieces and deeper painting. Saying that I have no justifiable reason to exclude your pieces.

Greg, that's exactly how I feel, which is the cause of my doubt. The decoration on the vase looks a little unprofessional to me, going toward hobbyist. Also, I checked on the collectors web site for painters signatures, but couldn't find this one. The plate, I don't know, could just be wear, but it should be brighter.

Gila, thanks! Maybe it was originally a cake / dessert serving set. I decided to stop bleeding over it and just place it in my space at the antique mall.

BTW, you are really good at finding stuff on the net.

I'd be very reluctant to assign anything to Pickard that does not bear one of the known Pickard marks. The Porzellanfabrik Moschendorf plate is a bit more traditional than most of Pickard's designs especially around the borders. As far as I know Pickard did not use decals in their early pieces.

I'm leaning towards hobbyist on the vase. Those azaleas remind me of the Noritake pattern distributed by Larkin. Your vase is not Noritake, but azaleas were also popular hobbyist decorations around 1900 or so. I think the Pickard artist signature is just a coincidence. And you're right that the painting is not professional enough for Pickard. JMHO.

Don, thanks. Perhaps the vase was painted by Ellie or Evelyn or Esther Pickard, lol!

I have "Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China" by Alan B. Reed. He does not list an artist with a first name beginning with an E and a last name of Pickard.

IMHO, the first piece isn't Pickard, as colors and overall look of the piece isn't quite "Pickard" like. They are primarily known for completely handpainted pieces, which is why their work is collected.

As you and others have noted, the quality of the painting on the 2nd piece isn't up to Pickard's standards. And the blurry versus crisp edges on the handpainting point to hobbyist work versus any professional studio.

Since neither are marked Pickard, I would not attribute either of the pieces to Pickard.
