Red Wing Art Pottery, original glaze?

I picked this piece up today at a flea market for next to nothing. At first I thought the black was original to the piece, but now I'm having some doubts. I think it has Nokomis glaze under the black. But I the black had a nice crystalline design like a couple of example linked below.

About the 4th piece down the page - http://www.redwingcollectors.org/category/ask_the_experts/artware/page/8

Here's the same mold as mine with the Nokomis glaze. https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/339100_red-wing-nokomis-vase-shape-208-10-38

Any thoughts? I would hate to strip the black off its original. But it's already worn through in spots revealing the Nokomis below.

I don't think the paint is original

It could be hiding old repairs

It's not worth much as is

    Go ahead and strip it

I would have thought this done by someone after production as well. The fact that you have found two other examples on early forms makes me think twice. The two people with the other examples seem to assert that it is a glaze and not a paint. I guess I would take some lacquer thinner or acetone and test an inconspicuous spot inside the neck to see if it cuts the coating. If it does, this would not be a glaze. Even if not a glaze, these could have been done by a decorating company using Redwing blanks. I would want to make awfully sure that there is something under there before removing the black.

I tried little acetone on the inside. It removed the paint but it appears the black might stain the glaze to a gray color. I'm thinking the acetone isn't strong enough.

While we're waiting for OP to reply, can you offer any insight regarding his original question about the glaze / paint application (and if it was applied by Red Wing or an outside decorator)?

It looks like a rare glaze Red Wing used on shapes that were typically nokomis glazed.

Yeah, I still have it. I haven't messed with the glaze other than the tiny sample spot on the interior.

If we are allowed to do this, I would be interested in buying it if you wanted to sell it. Thanks!
