Featured Ivory(?)salt and pepper shakers

Hi all. Picked these up knowing that they were probably ivory,knowing how hard it is to sell now,but loving the carving and the fitted leather case so I went against my better judgement! They are 2 inches high,and the tops screw off. I found some that sorta looked like these,but it said they were African and Id have sworn oriental .Theres some faint writing on them,but all I can make out is "Gryll" and some numbers. I cant even photograph it,its so faint. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

 

Definitely ivory. Too bad. You'll just have to hoard them.

Yup. And from the shape and carving, not African but rather Indian from the Colonial era.

 

Even better ! The quality is amazing,I swear one day Im going to drag out all my pretties and use them,wouldnt these look stunning on a breakfast tray ? And yes,Im sorry elephants died !

Very nice, I'd say they were Indian too, they remind me of Indian carved chess pieces

 

The shape is a traditional howdah or elephant canopy. And spot on with the chess shape: there's whole sets of them.

 

I would have found those hard to pass up too. And I know better now for sure!

Johnny, don't beat yourself up over the Ivory......they were there....you found them....& I don't know one of us who would have passed these up.....they are now art work....very fine......& whether for use or display.....I'd be proud to own them too !!!

I'd have bought them and used them. I like to buy things like this to have till I die. I don't care what happens after that
