I think you're in the right period, Sue, but I don't see quite the same "squarish" bits that Portland has at the outer ends of the rounded part on kardinalismo's fork. (Hope that made some small bit of sense. :wacky:)

I was hoping for you ladies to speak up. I also could not make out the mark. As to pattern I ran through a few that didn't prove out. They were Watson's "John Alden" of which my grandparents had a small meat/carving set and Watson's "Mayflower." They both are on the following page:

Whiting's "King Albert" was another family silver pattern that isn't right either:

I've looked through every reference I have access to looking for some kind of hint on the mark itself - to no avail. I'm beginning to wonder whether it was a retailer's mark.

Kard - could you take another picture of the end of the handle in a vertical orientation?

Convenient that it's stamped 'handle'. Are the tines stamped 'pointy bits'?

Bob, above the word "handle" is the word sterling, I believe. It's cement, or whatever, filled. Tines are steel.

I went through Turner's American Flatware book, maker by maker. My guess was the only one close enough to fit, as I went through it...and yes, B/Sue, there were many similars. I think knives and thicker serving pieces often distort the pattern enough that it is a hard call sometimes.

That's quite true, Sue. Not to mention that the one pic that shows the handle end is taken from an angle that makes it hard to match up with the reference pics or drawings.

Why do I see squiggly writing to the right of handle? Looks mid Eastern? I need better glasses.
