The first of these had written on the envelope - Tully bicycle racing about 92. I don't know which one is him.

The next three had written - Tully bicycle riding about 92 or 93.

Too bad they are so blurry. I guess he set up his camera beforehand?

Oops - I see that some of these should be flipped the other way.

    What a daredevil! :wideyed:

Remembering that your photographer's middle name was Tully, the question is whether this series was taken by someone else with him on the bike? He would have been 20 in 1892. Or is this another relative whose first name was Tully.

About the image orientation - any way you can make out the letters on the sign at the corner of the tall building? I couldn't see anything else that might tell you which way is correct.

Okay, I'm voting for him being the subject. His given name was Samuel, as was his father's, making it likely that he was called by his middle name while his father still alive to avoid confusion between them.

Clearly, although the bicycle had been invented, it was many years before anyone discovered the best way to actually ride one.

I'd be posting these on the Mike Wolfe, American Picker site on Facebook. Mike Wolfe is a pre-WW1 bike nut and he'd probably snag the negs. If the price is right of course. :)

The ones with the kepi might be a little later - the women's dresses are too short for the 1890s. Even so, images of trick riding from before WWII can't be too common.

Not if they are *young* women. They did wear their skirts much shorter.

Messilane -- weren't you the person who recommended two book(s) by Joan Severa?

If you were, I want to thank you so much for that recommendation. My public library obtained them through inter-library loan programs and the books came into my hands yesterday.

I started reading My Likeness Taken last night. The details she gives on clothing and accessories are fascinating.

The other book, Dressed for the Photographer, looks just as interesting and I'm looking forward to reading/studying it also.

I don't think it was me, but glad you were able to get them.

On the corner of the tall (brick?) structure at the edge of the photos with the daredevil in the foreground. The lowest story of the building is a lighter color than the upper ones. There's a bright white rectangular (?) area with what appears to be black writing on it. That's what I perceived as a sign. :pics: Maybe it's not?

That isn't a sign - it's just the granite blocks sticking out.

    Ah. I see that now.
