African Fertility Figure

    Another family heirloom, probably from mid century. Suspect just a tourist item but making sure it's nothing special. And any info on what tribe she represents or other info appreciated.     Similar carvings are made by several groups in east and southern Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa). It looks similar to this carving made by a Maasai artisan in Kenya:

    I would not usually cite an ebay listing, but this one comes from a crafts cooperative with direct connections to Kenya. Such carvings are made for sale as souvenirs.

    It may be portraying an Ndebele woman, an ethnic group in Zimbabwe and South Africa in which married women wear neck rings.
