Antique dresser or Server Maybe?

Hi all. New to the boards here. I buy and resell furniture of all types from antiques, to mid century, to even just current run of the mill Pier 1. Mostly at auction, and occasionally I come across pieces that I find really interesting but don't have a lot of knowledge to know exactly what it is.

This piece is one of those. I know its not likely to be worth a ton, but there is just a cool factor about it to me. If I had a place for it I'd keep it really.

From what I can tell its probably mahogany and from the 30s or 40s.

I am not positive on what it was used for. My best guess is that it was maybe an office cabinet since it had a place for a lock, or maybe liquor? I'm not sure really.

Hoping someone on here might know a bit more, as I really am a bit novice at antiques.

Although I am selling this piece, mostly I am asking here for my info as I really don't think this is a hidden eBay treasure to sell or anything like that.

    Thanks.

I'm not good at period styles.
    My Guess
    English Sheraton - in style
I think the time period is earlier than 30s-40s. More like early 1900 - 20s, possibly 1890s.

I do think you are correct that it was a sideboard and liquor was locked in it.

Does it appear that it had a piece attached to the top at all?
Where the arrow is on the right, is there a corresponding discoloration?

Do these knobs (top two on right) match the others? Hard to tell, might be the camera angle that makes them look different.

I also think older. Would like a look at the drawer construction (dovetails and drawer bottom). Not sure the purpose. Might be a dining room piece with storage for silverware, serving pieces, and linens. Could also be a bedroom piece.

Clutteredcloset, I think those two knobs (top two on right) are different from the other knobs. ;)

@clutteredcloset49 You have a good eye there. She picked up a different knob someone along the line. Noticed that as well after posting when I was making a CList ad.

Ill get a full pic of the top as well.

@verybrad As for the drawers, I do believe they were dovetailed. Ill get a pick up on it tomorrow. Any other pics while Im at it?

    Appreciate lending yalls expertise.

Brad asked for drawer bottom as well.

Did you see the question about whether it looks like there was a top?

Yeah, Ill do full pics of the drawers. As for the color, I have the full top pic but dont think the flash hit on that one to show good color. Ill redo the top pic tomorrow when Im at the shop. Not sure if there was something on top of it previously or if the other side was discolored.

So doesn't look like a top piece sat there as there is no discoloration.

Brad is better with furniture than I am. But after looking at the drawers, I say at least late 1800s. Wait for Brad.

I think earlier yet. Maybe as early as late 18th century. Would think English but not terribly confident about that. Bears a lot of the earmarks of Hepplewhite furniture. I wonder if the bottom has been cut down or modified. The pulls are not typical for Hepplewhite but not unheard of. It also could be an early 19th century transitional piece. This is a bit out of my league but think this is worth having someone more knowledgeable take a look.

I'm with Brad. Late 18th to early 19th. Those look like pine lined drawers, might be rosewood rather than mahogany and box stringing. Bottom has had a few inches off it. (One of these days, I'll upload a photo of my nice Georgian cupboard with drawers!)

I suspect this sat in a gentleman's bedroom. Hats in the cupboard.

    And yes, English.

I thought folded shirts.....but a top hat will do too.

The area this came out of is a German town established around the early 1800s. Lots of antiques come out of the town that were passed down through the years. Pretty cool that it could be that old potentially. I took some more photos of the bottom of the cabinet. My question is I guess, do you mean that I should have an antique dealer look at it, or just poke around on the boards here? Not sure what Im dealing with here. I knew it looked had an appeal to it for the craftsmanship and detail. I had it up for sale for about $250 on Craigslist but took that down since now Im not sure what I have now. The way the back is, I'm wondering if this wasn't built into the house rather than a stand alone piece.

Would they have locked up their clothing?

If you all are thinking late 1700s, early 1800s. I'm still thinking liquor, but possibly sugar or tea.

    Hi,
Thanks for the other photos. Much older than I first thought. The lock was added later. Look at the repair above the door lock. Too large for liquor or a sugar chest or tea chest. Its been reinforced several times but still a wonderful piece.
