Rolled gold thoughts?

im just after some info about rolled gold & your thoughts really, i have now finished sorting through boxes of old jewellery and have quite a few bits in the rolled gold/unhallmarked pile, doesnt look like it sells much on ebay & as theres no hallmarks etc i suppose its impossible to put a date or any value on it, someone said melt down but it would be a shame to destroy them, whats everyone's thought ?? if i was to melt how would i go about it? and how much gold is there in a gram of rolled gold?

 

Short form: not much. Rolled gold is gold-filled with fancier zip code. Refineries will take it, but they pay by the pound rather than by the ounce and you have to have a business license if memory serves. Whether it ought to be scrapped or sold depends on the design , historic value and condition. One of my favorite finds ever is a gold-filled bracelet worn down to the bare brass, but it has an inscription that's worth more than the metal content. Old mass-produced watch bands .. melt 'em.(LOL)

 

Why not make a lot and sell that on ebay? It should sell, but if you think you have anything interesting there let us see it first. Maybe we could help you date or ID some of it, you never know
