    Hello everybody,

Today I received a opaline glass epergne / centerpiece horn vase.
I'm not really sure how to call it.

I was very dissapointed when I found out that the horn was glued to the base.
This should have been a 2 piece- set.

Unfortunately I bought it online, and the seller disguided this information.
    Also he placed pictures, where:

    1) You couldn't see that it was glued.
    2) You couldn't see that the yellowish glue is visible through the glass.

Although, I'd still like to have some more information about it.

Seller said it was a jugendstil vase.
Well, the seller isn't 100% trustable.

He might be right but, I'd like to know:

    1- Where it's coming from.
    2- When it was made.

    Height: 39,5 cm/ 15.55 inch.
    Diameter: 24 cm/ 9.45 inch.

    Thank you very much!

Yes, I have mailed the seller.
By the way, it's from an antique shop.

I have told him, I can't believe he posted beautiful pictures of the vase, not mentioning or showing that it was glued. Also not in the text. I told him this is misguidance on purpose. Meaning, on purpose he avoid to show it.

    Just got a message back:
    Good evening,

The pictures are made as they should. They're not photoshopped.
(I don't know how to say it in English, but) We are buying in, and then selling it.
The fact that it's glued, as you are saying, is not known to us. We haven't changed anything about it. We did our best to bring it to the market. Also we have carefully packed and shipped it. We don't know what you want from us now, en we'll think about what to do with this... Deception is not a the case, and we find that a serious accusation. You will hear from us again.

    Unbelievable!

First of all, he's saying he packed and shipped it.
    Therefore he must have known.

If he bought it somewhere else, and let it be sent directly from there to me,
he can't claim to have sent it properly.

But in that case, he as a seller, is still responsible.

People like this mess up the online trade.
This has happened to me multiple times now in a period of 2 years.

If he packed it up the glue would be very hard to miss.
How did you pay for it? Hopefully through PayPal or Visa.

R Antonis, I had a purchase that went awry not too long ago, and I thought the same. It was a glass piece, and about an inch down from the top, on the inside, there was what I can only call a "pimple" in the glass. The "bump" was on the inside, but on the outside, there was a very visible "bulls eye" type ring where the inner defect was located.

When I contacted the seller, at first she denied that it was there. I sent photos; she said she couldn't see what I was talking about.

After much back and forth, she finally wrote, "Well, I am legally blind, but I always have my husband check for damage, and he didn't see anything."

    Yeah, well...

Those people should't be dealing with customer contact.

I can understand, if you are selling something to somebody, but you haven't bought it yet. Then let the person you buy it from, send it directly to the person you sell it to. That's very easy. But all risk is yours. And people like to come back from that, since there's already paid for it.

    (excuse my english :cigar:)

My understanding of jugendstil, is that it is German and of Art Nouveau influence.

Although this may be of the same time period, I see nothing to indicate Art Nouveau design.

Are you sure that is what he meant.
Not that he buys and resells, he packed it and didn't notice it wasn't supposed to be glued.

There are a lot of people who buy things and have no idea what it is they are selling. They have no idea whether everything is original or not.

Not defending him, just pointing out other possibilities.

These were ALL the pictures attached to his advertisement.
Option 1: He made the pictures himself.
Option 2: This is how HE bought it himself.

Option 1: If he made the pictures himself, he obviously diceived me.
Option 2: If this is the state in which he received it himself, since he had to pack it again...

He would be just as shocked as I am now, since it doesn't look like the pictures at all.

But does anyone have an idea about it's origin or age?

I'll try to sell it first, to be sure to get my money back.
In the meantime I'm waiting for a response.

But in order for me to sell it properly, I need to know more about it.

Dab some acetone nail polish remover around that and I bet it will come loose.Id guess its early 1900's , and really quite pretty. Depending on what you paid,I dont see it as that big a deal and I certainly dont think fraud was the intent.

Yes I have thought about using some kind of glue dissolver.

But there's always a chance that the "end" of the horn, which falls in the base,
    is broken or something.

The whole hole is full of glue, there's even a drip dried up, leaking all the way down.

It is a gamble though. Wouldn't it affect the glass itself you think?

I totally missed your reply. German... That could be possible. Although I find it more likely to be French. Jugendstil-term is also used in the Netherlands a lot.

I paid almost €100,00 for it. To me that's a lot of money to be honest.

I think I'll try the nail polish remover, hoping that the horn vase isn't cracked at it's base.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

First-off, I don't know much of anything about your piece, BUT I would be hesitant to remove the glue IF you think you might get your money back!! My thought is, that with that much glue....it probably IS broken in there (but also possibly just extremely wobbly which might say they don't go together!), and then you would have a mess on your hands......unless you want to take it to a restorer!!
