Mosaic of St. Francis

Hello thank you so much for accepting me into this forum. I wanted to post an old mosaic I have I don’t know much about the piece besides it being signed on the back “MAY” Its believed to be the name of a Joyce May the person that had given it to me said she was a very talented artist that lived in Bronx, NY. I have also heard she did mosaic work for the NYC subway stations which was also mosaic murals, I treid searching the MTA museum briefly although many of the artists that did work at these stations were not even noted anywhere many of the mosaics featured in the subway stations are listed as "unknown artist". I also have not found any other art or mosaic done by her. So I am not even sure if this was done by her.

The mosaic is about 3 feet high it’s very detailed. It looks to be a picture of St Francis, because it has the three knots in his roped belt and also a halo which means saint. The style reminds me so much of the Roman Mosaics, I have recently been doing some research on them and this one is just as beautiful it also seems so old. The details are very intricate. The colors are so beautiful. Can someone give me any information on this , maybe about the artist if it is by a Joyce May or maybe it looks to be the work of someone else? I would love to see other pieces of art from her if they can be found. And of course how much would something like this be worth? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Its nice but she probably never got highly known for her work which is why you don't see any of her other work out there. Its worth what someone will pay. Since there is no auction prices of her work its unknown. Since she isn't highly recognized value would probably be more of decorative unless you can find someone in the NY area that buys her work/collects.

 

On the other hand, she was IMO an outstanding mosaic artist so if you’re selling it, I’d wait out the specific buyer who collects mosaics and/or religious images. I think you can use her name although I think words like Outsider Folk Art Religious Mosaic St. Francis etc. are more important. I think it’s a terrific piece.
