I found this in a thrift store today and was immediately drawn to the setting. It was covered in gunk and dirt. I first thought sterling and maybe glass but the stone felt cold and I could see inner flaws, etc.
Cleaned it up and it seemed very well made and a mark appeared on the band, just '18' no other marks. So I test the stone and it's a polished sapphire, a 10mm x 14mm stone and the setting tests as 18kt gold.
The stone has a purple tone in sunlight but it's mainly a medium-dark blue. Lots of occlusions, sparkly flecks and variation of color.
That said, I know white gold wasn't used in jewelry until the mid 1920's. I'm thinking maybe Victorian Revival, 1940's maybe ?
I know my pics make it look like yellow gold but it is white and any discoloration of the gold inside of the back is just dirt I haven't cleaned off yet.
    TIA !

Thank you komokwa, it was those ribbons on the side that grabbed me. It was so filthy it was hard to see the details.

Probably made before 1950,hand fabricated with at least 15 pieces of gold.Sapphire "native cut",but the inclusions and lines look very strange.

Great find Calico, and it is beautiful.
Nowadays they call the style Retro, from that wonderful post-war period when all those pre-war styles were thrown together, some features accentuated, and some devil-may-care designs and Hollywood bling were added. Love that period.
Those swirls underneath the mount are taken from ca. 1900 rings, the bows are very 'Retro'.
That can be a feature of sapphires with less clarity, not considered 'gemstone' quality. The term 'natural sapphire', which Calico used, applies to these stones. In this case the lack of clarity is part of the appeal of the ring.

Interesting Ring! I would have guessed the stone to be Lapis, had it not tested as sapphire. Nice find!

Thank you for the help. :) It was hard to capture the stone's features, it slightly resembles lapis until you get closer and hold it in hand and then the almost glassy look becomes apparent, interesting to be sure. Any Jewelry, thank you for the expert advice.
