Gold or fakey gold?

say_it_slowly The worst prison is a closed heart

I've got this chain that is lightly marked with what appears to be 14K though it's not a robust marking and looks more like '4K. I don't see any other marks.

Not being a jewelry person nor a gold-a-phile (is that a word?) I'm wondering if it's just a fake or something. It is about 24" long and weighs around 37g on my postal scale. Does it look like a known knockoff or how does one know short of heading to a jeweler?

The surface appears plated - shinier than 14K. The jump ring would usually be soldered together if real quality. Try the magnet. Should be zero reaction to a strong magnet.

Check the clasp for marks too. A real gold necklace would have a gold hallmark on the clasp too. It looks like fakey mcfake face from here.

The only thing a magnet will tell you is if the piece is actually magnetic. There is magnetic gold used in jewelry, magnetic platinum and platinum which is actually a magnet.

    Gray-White Gold (18K)Gold 75%
    Iron 17%
    Copper 8%

That's very interesting, so possibly some could react to a magnet.

I did decide to file off the 14K mark when last I was here so no one would be tricked. Under the "gold" where the mark was it is copper. Doesn't answer why the chain reacted to a magnet exactly but the clasp part isn't 14K.

Any metal plated gold, silver, rhodium, etc. will react to a magnet depending on the strength of the magnet.

Not any base metal. Brass or copper will not. The only magnetic metals are iron, nickel and cobalt.

Never heard of iron in gold. Iron would not make white. Nickel (magnetic) makes it white. Nickel or iron do not exhibit magnetic properties in that low of a concentration. A US nickel coin is about 20% nickel and has no magnetic attraction.

Any magnetic attraction rules out gold, silver or platinum. Lack of attraction does not make it for sure, but rather makes it a possibility.

With the gray-white formula above the 17% iron would have some attraction to a niobium magnet.Since rhodium plated sterling and gold are first plated with nickel they have some attraction to magnets.Platinum alloyed with cobalt is very attracted to a magnet and has been in commercial jewelry for over 20 years.

There is platinum jewelry in which the platinum pieces are actual magnets.

Sorry about your lack of information... what part is wrong? the platinum magnets,platinum/cobalt jewelry being magnetic, the gray-white gold being somewhat magnetic.

Sorry about your gullibility. Cobalt alloy called platinum is a scam. Please stop.

I was once told that some Chinese green gold has iron content. I was also told it was a bit of a rarity.
