I love the old illustrated trade cards, too. The artwork and graphic design on many of them is just great.

Here's a completely different Dickens Calendar for 1896 by Raphael Tuck & Sons.

I see they did a Dickens calendar every year for a while. Of course, Charles Dickens was a very popular author. I'm surprised they did two for one year, though. This one has the pages held together by rings. So maybe the different format makes a difference?

This one is very floral while Book's appears to be illustrations from the stories. I'm beginning to suspect they made at least several different ones per year to suit different tastes. Wonder if they ever did one with a Dickens villains theme.

I suspect all three originally had twisted string or a ribbon holding them together.

Dickens was so popular I wouldn't be surprised if they made 4 or 5 different calendars every year.

This note that Miss Vary & Mrs. Pitts paid a call Aug 25 '96 was made by the original owner.

You know, I noticed that but hadn't even read it Bronwen. My mind is a little scattered. I'm going to go get the pages and see if anything else of interest is written on them.

At first glance I thought maybe my mother had made a notation of where & when she bought the calendar. She died in 1995, so '96 is 1896 & the call was not made on the telephone.

    Definitely 1896.
Nope - nothing written on the rest of them except maybe a dealers #.
That's pretty cool that something is on there written by the original owner.

I researched the company that made the calendar I have at the store. Different German company (I don't remember who). Anyway they made calendars on order for advertising purposes.

Wouldn't be surprised if Tuck and Sons didn't do the same.

Yes Cluttered - it seems like after Raphael retired his 3 sons expanded the business in every direction.

Okay - I've written the listing. Now I have to retake photos.
What color background would be best?
Please keep in mind that I'm going to cover my coffee table in something and take them there. Pathetic.

Do you think I should include a photo of every page? If yes, what about the backs of every page. Normally I would just show a few, but since I'm hoping to get a lot of money for it, I thought maybe I should show all of them. I did list every little stain or tear on every page.

You could try a few to see what you think. To me, it shouldn't be an extremely bright color, since the colors in the calendar seem muted. Maybe a pale rose, or a pale gold or tan?

If you're going to go for a high amount of money it would be good to include all of the fronts and the reverse sides, too. IMO...

I think the lighter color you have them on now, shows the fact that they are cream color.
I would highlight the ones you like best as single photos, then I would include the front and back of each page. Maybe as a side by side in one picture (you know what I mean two pictures in one).
With a comment that you will furnish more pictures if requested.
