A couple of us think that it has been refinished. He may have done the work himself and spent a lot of time and effort in making it look nice.

Well if that's the case he should know he will never see a return on the elbow grease. Either way he can keep it.

His asking price seems to be in line with what others are asking for this type of table.

    His listing:

I am not saying that I agree or have any knowledge of this type of furniture.
In fact, I will be the first to admit that furniture is not my strong point. This may be a newer piece, I honestly don't know.

However, that still does not excuse your poor offer.
We have had many comments about how insulting it is to get low ball offers on things that we have for sale. I feel his comments back to you were justified.

Please don't get mad at me for being honest with you.
As you said you are still learning, and there is a lot to learn. Both as a seller and as a buyer.

If, in your mind, someone is asking way too much for an item, it is best to walk away. Your offer was less than 25% of asking price. Most people feel like even 1/2 price offers are too low and insulting. Personally, I wouldn't consider an offer 30% off asking but wouldn't be insulted and would counter it. 20% off or less would be worth considering.

Back to the table, the wood is some kind of tropical hardwood and I get a Colonial vibe from it. Hence, the possibly Indonesian comment. I am not seeing any kind of wear and tear I would expect on an old piece. It is a beautiful unusual table but things are only worth what people are willing to pay. The owner is fishing for a buyer who really appreciates the table regardless of price. Those buyers are out there but it may take a long while to find him/her.

I've never considered an offer...even low ball to be personally insulting to me.
It may well insult the items I'm selling......& they may feel bad about it ....
but that's their problem.....not mine !:hilarious:

This puts me in mind of the time I went to an estate sale and made a low ball offer (they wanted $600,I offered $150)on a beautiful antique day bed. The estate people were mortally offended, but took my number anyway. TWO months later they call me,and I low balled THAT offer and they accepted it! The joke was on me though,as it REEKED of cat pee and would have costs $1200 to recover. I put it by the road and it was gone 10 mins later.

    Very true.
The examples you showed were the low end sales of newer tables. If you click on the highest price sold you will see that some did sell up in the $4-600 range.

And there are people out there who will pay the price if they really want something.
Locale, how you market, who you've built as a customer base all play into your sales.

The seller with this table has 100% feedback. Been selling since 2000. Good feedback.
So he must have something going for him.

I see your points about a low offer being taken as an insult. I really didn't view it as an offer I expected the person to accept, rather a starting point for negotiation. I've personally never considered any low offer as an insult. Let's be real, I want to get it as cheap as I can. He wants as much as he can get.
Starting to wonder if you are him...

Really - Your powers of deduction seemed to be flawed. No wonder you erred so grievously in your offer.

I was actually trying to help you learn. I'm done. Good luck.

I wouldn't have even answered an offer that low, just rejected it and blocked the bidder. OTOH, given that it's an obvious modern reproduction, $200 may be all the money ... which the seller no doubt will find out the hard way.

I also checked this seller's other auctions; he as full retail on a lot of it and some necklaces with about 5x retail on the. Jade and carnelian? Not with trade show/craft store beads that may or may not be stone and costume clasps. OTOH if he can get those prices, more power to him.
