Can anyone help with carved wood medieval?

    From the photographs, it is difficult to tell how much of the carving may be something other than wood. Amber seems highly unlikely, but it might be a mixture of shellac and wax, much like sealing wax. This was a common technique among restorers.

    Did they use actual shellac? I did think what OP is seeing as being like amber is some kind of coating/varnish, but beyond me to know of what. Certainly looks better dusted off.

    I think it’s a wax plaque from Germany, common tourist item.

    Maybe what was known as sulphur (spelling variable) wax. It is red & gets quite hard.

    Early medieval sealing wax used a combination of beeswax and other resins, but after trade with India became well established shellac was used. Shellac was also used in various compositions for molded objects, such as buttons, picture frames, and daguerreotype cases. I have also seen it used as an adhesive on archeological objects, sometimes leaving an orange stain on the material.

    A slab of amber that big would need to be seen by a museum....

    Now.....
    I was commenting on your item.....but you turned it into a personal attack on my personality............... calling me a dumb sarcastic attention seeker......

    @komokwa if you were being sarcastic I’m not sorry if you weren’t I am.....I was half asleep taking care of my mother who recently had a stroke.......so sorry if I took it the wrong way
