I came across this at a thrift store yesterday. It looks handmade to me because of the imperfections in shape and the way the bottom meets the sides and the writing on the bottom. But it has no maker's marks that I can find. I cleaned off all the tarnish trying to find something identifying and I'm pretty sure that I created all the swirls in the finish in doing so. Any feedback whatsoever would be helpful.

I don't think the scratched writing is going to be any help in IDing it. The content will need to be tested. That type of impressed pattern is usually seen on mass produced silverplate.

Welcome, K4therine! I've just resized your photos a bit so folks can see them better - particularly the numbers on the bottom.

that looks like it was done with an electric pencil and i doubt it's anything more than a thrift store stock number..

    That is really lovely.
I think possibly Japanese. I'm basing this on the birds, rooster and leaves of the plants.
As was stated the mark may have been added later, and may have nothing to do with the maker.

Does a magnet stick to it?

Did you use a buffer to polish it?

Take a strong magnifying glass and look at these areas. There won't be a change of color in the metal if it is silver. It will look pitted and different if it is plated.

If you have someone test it. Do it on the bottom where it won't show.

One last question since you have it in hand. It doesn't feel tinny does it? Like chrome?

Chrome and silver have a different feel. Also the tarnish of silver has a different smell.
If you test for silver, come back and let us know what you find out.

I thought you had found one of these, possibly abandoned in a desert somewhere.
