Hi. I have been spending days looking for information on this plate. I inherited it from my Grandmother. I cant read the makers mark on the back and can't find anything like it. It was hanging in my grandma's house growing up and I never asked her about it. I would love to know where it is from and what the symbol on the girls arm means. I have done searches for the symbol and can't find anything similar. I thought she had said it was from Germany, but I could be wrong. Any information would be great. Thanks so much. The symbol on the lady's blouse looks rather like an anchor over a line to me. Since she's greeting 2 men walking along a shoreline (with a boat in the distance?) perhaps she's a wife of a sailor?

Welcome Heidi, :) I increased the contrast of the maker's mark on the back:

Another "perhaps" - that long blonde braid make me think Scandinavian?

It is a marquetry plate, there have been kits available for at least a hundred years and commercial items also. The marks at the bottom of the mark almost look Japanese/Chinese.

My first reaction on pieces like this is always Polish. The Poles have been doing a ton of marquetry decorative items for years now. There are a lot coming out of India too, but this one is European. I may be all wet, but she's definitely from the Baltic area somewhere.

Sure looks like it on closer inspection. :) That part of the world likes its wood inlay.

The national flower of Latvia is the daisy.

Latvia's national landmark, The Freedom Monument," is a statue of a woman holding three stars representing the country's three districts.

You can check these symbols against the markings on your plate.
