I bought this last week. I know for sure that the top is solid rosewood. Apparently the fixtures are new, and it has been refinished. I would like to know what the experts think a value would be on it. I'm trying to feel better about what I gave for it, which was for me substantial. Thanks in advance!

it's a very nice desk...use it well and amortize the cost over the many years that you will enjoy it..!

You see, I'm totally out of my element with this. Now start talking guitars and I'm in more comfortable waters!

I would say maybe if you got right person but I would have guessed $600-$800 at a good auction.

Well shoot. Does it's having been refinished hurt the value?

Indiana. I paid $1000 for it, but shipping it here will cost $350. So I'm $1350 into it.

around here we're very fond of saying the brown furniture is at present a very depressed market...with lower than average prices.

    with some exceptions of course...

Is there any way you can cancel the sale ? Normally I wouldnt suggest that, but I feel you WAY overpaid.Im thinking its rather newish as well. Hopefully Brad will chime in.

Probably not unless it has been misrepresented in the description. Since I paid with PayPal they tend to side with the buyer on such matters.
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/161711271937

It is an interesting piece. I really can't say if their description is correct or not. I would like to have seen some construction details and details on the hardware. The fact that this breaks down in to three pieces is odd. My gut reaction is that this is a colonial piece of unknown age. The carving is not what I would expect to see on a 19th century piece. What you paid seems like a lot of money to me but it is a unique piece. You might not find another like it for any amount of money.

I wonder what the odds are of it being all solid rosewood? I was shocked that the top is one solid piece!

I just find it odd they didnt show pictures of the drawers dovetails, thats one of the first things people look at. I cant shake the feeling its newer made to look old,or is old but heavily repaired, wich significantly reduces value. Its a lovely thing, dont get me wrong, but you may have a valid snad case. Just my opinion, and Im often wrong. If it is genuine, you got a heck of a deal.

It is not. You can see that it is two pieces joined.

I wondered if that was a crack or two pieces that had become delaminated over time.
