Received this along with a Captains desk (I believe they're called) when my nan passed away and having a name stamped on the drawer of the desk enabled me to learn more about it, unfortunately this vase is out of my googling skills....

Any information on it will be truly appreciated. Sorry if the writing is upside down :/

I don't know anything about the orientation of Asian writing so you're good with me, I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is Japanese:dead:; Your much better off waiting for someone who knows more of the subject. They'll be along soon.:)

Yeah, I hear the clomp clomp of baked dirt feets in the distance.................and not only the potty-people..........we have some bi-tri-lingual people around as well..........but as you can tell, I'm not even conversant in ONE language, let alone two or three or a gazillion............

It is, but I'll forgive you this time. I'll check after dinner.

Although I think it could be Japanese, in that case I am of no use to you.

I think it was the little character, top right, that threw me. Knowing no oriental language at all a reversed 'E' seemed odd.

    Thanks for the edit

That reversed E should ideally be closed on both sides, it means Nichi, which refers to Nippon, Japan. So yes, definitely Japanese.

It could be Fukagawa ware. Whatever it is, it is beautiful.

Japanese, late 19th, early 20th c. I think. Nice! You might be able to find the mark on www.gotheborg.com under Japanese marks.

I would have thought Satsuma. Only a guess

Could be. I associate Satsuma marks with those seal like marks, but they do have calligraphied marks as well.

    Thank you for the link.

I have found similar markings, which leads me to another question. Do markings need to be an exact match to be from the maker/era?

The top 3 on the right hand side are the same, but the rest is different. I think.

(Left are the markings from gotheberg.com, right are the markings from my vase)

There are always small differences if they are handwritten, but these are too different, the only characters that are similar are the general Japanese ones, a bit like 'made in Japan'.
