    Hi,

I joined this forum as I occasionally buy items of jewellery that need further identification/investigation, and hope that you well knowledgeable folk can help!

I will try to make my enquiries as difficult as possible to answer, as this makes it more interesting.

To start I have the following cameo to identify which I would guess is encased in Irish Bog Wood. cameo front.jpg cameo side.jpg cameo back.jpg

    Thanks,
    Indy

Ps: Not that it matters but they are not my hands lol

The jewelry ladies usually come around later. Be sure to drop back in.

My own personal opinion and it may not be correct.
Looking at the style of cutting. I think early 1800s. Cameo most likely is Italian. Don't know about the wood frame.

I agree with clutteredcloset, and I do think the frame could well be bog oak.

That might be a marriage, but the frame is indeed most likely bog oak. Nice piece, but I don't think the quality of the cameo is up to the quality of the frame. That's just me however.

Hi and thanks for all your comments so far, although the "another frog to kiss" remark eludes me for the moment lol

Comments so far suggest, Italian, bog wood (Maybe Irish due to the three leaf clover hint) and circ early 1800's

It is suggested that the straight Roman style nose makes it Victorian or even possible earlier, and the 'C' clasp also suggests an early cameo.

If anyone can give more info on other possible dates (Love it if the cameo was even earlier then the 1800's)

I must admit I though the scene was reminiscent of Tudor England due to the clothing and the hawking link, but I guess Italy may have also worn the same style of clothing, and almost definitely hawked.

Anyway; please keep your comments coming, and if you know of another good place I can post this enquiry for more info, please let me know.

    Thanks again,
    Indy

The hinge and pin length are early to mid Victorian which I think fits with the "Grand Tour" age.

Now, now, Afantiques, are you perchance intimating that the poster is a "treasure-tease"? :shame: :D

Oh my goodness, for some reason I am feeling that perhaps my comment (#9 above) has been interpreted in a light different from what I intended.:(

That being said, trust me when I say that the doorknob won't be hitting my "behindie" (feminine and "Southern" for "behind") on the way out of this thread.;)

I agree and belive the style of hinge would fit mid to late Victorian Era, I have not specifically studied hinges on Brooches but have studied antique wooden box hardware (some jewelry boxes) and Victorian Era glasses hinges. From all I have seen on other items this hinge would be found in the period expressed above.:D

    ???

My comment is: I agree with the above dating, etc.
Furthermore the hawk and the goose or swan are probably symbolic for something in the relationship between the two.

    Now apologize to the lady.

but will leave the thread open so as to acquire more info on the brooch, please feel free komokwa to offer your own thoughts pertaining to the 'cameo' in question.

Relationship between the hawk & goose, interesting thought, thanks for that I will look into that.

Now with regards to apologizing to the lady, what lady and for what?

    Excuse us.
But your first comment was the cryptic one. You're going to make it difficult for us to answer?

If you have taken any time to explore the forums, you will see that we often poke fun and jabs at each other for levity. Not to be rude or disrespectful, but because we enjoy each other. Just as one would do if we were holding a conversation.

And you don't just owe yourturn an apology, but everyone who answered.
We would really like to work with you and help you find answers, but don't jump on us because we like to have fun doing it.
