Featured THONET chair

Hi Everyone!

I'm looking for help in possibly dating this chair, and whether is was probably part of a dining set or a stand alone piece. Thanks, as always.

 

OUCH! That seat would make your cheeks sore, LOL!
Older square bolts and the deeper drawn screws but a newer screw pepair where the lamination seam was coming undone??

 

I know we've had other Thonet chairs. You might want to go back & see what was said about those.

 

I don't recall seeing this kind of paper label before. Looks earlier than others. Is the address in NY at Broadway and 17th Street? I can't see the whole bottom line.

Can't be a factory. It even says "Primary Saleroom" on the far left end of the label.

 

Café chair. Likely made in thousands.

This looks like an earlyish chair, pre WW1 IMO.
Between Thonet and Kohn and Kohn and the world demand for these bentwood chairs, the two firms were responsible for the decimation of the Beech forests of Europe.

 

Right about the beech forests. In this case, Austria.

If memory serves I saw a picture of Stanford White's Madison Square Garden's (the REAL Madison Square Garden ) outdoor dining area ca. 1900 or so and there were hundreds of these chairs being used. And that's just one venue.

 

I wonder if they were imported from Germany before the manufacturing began in the USA in the 40's, and as noted, this may likely have been a show room piece. Anyway, thanks for all the info and excellent photo editing. Bought it for $12.50 to fill a corner in a room, so I'm happy with the conversation piece at that price. The label drew me in....

 

My husband is pretty knowledgeable with the particulars of when different materials were used as he does some serious (and long) restoration projects of large items used in different wars. He had a gut feeling this quite possibly WWI-ish, at least. Less than thrilled I brought another thing into this house, but understands I simply like to learn something new any chance I can.

 

Just FYI this type of Thonet chair dates way back into the 19th century, and changed very little over the decades.
