Carved Wooden Cheese Press

Hi,

I bought an object recently and have discovered that it's a cheese press; but I can't get much more information about it.

EDIT: I've created an album in the photos section called "Cheese Press" but have also added some pics in this thread, below.

Dimensions: length 33.5 cm, width 16.5 cm, height of base 12 cm, height including the handle part 23 cm.

So I was wondering if anybody knows how old it is, where it's from, what sort of wood it's carved from etc. And although I have no intentions of selling it any time soon, I am of course curious about how much it might be worth!

yep, I guess so - I am WAY more familiar with moving chess pieces that I am with squeezing cheeses........

That being said, no matter what this piece is, it has a very pleasing form and finish.....me likey............

 

If those are the overall dimensions that converts roughly to 13.5" x 6.5"

How big is the hole to put an item in?

Did you notice the one in the fourth row down? It is described as being in the the shape of a ram, and appears to have approx the same size as the measurements given. Price? L 295

Tim - My eyes are notoriously poor - what sort of animal (if any) does your press represent?

A ram. It has a stylised ram's head at one end and the hindquarters at the other end with a stylised tail. Just underneath my photos above there are two small thumbnails, they show a close up of the head and hindquarters of the ram.

 

That's what I thought - it looks amazingly like the one in the link - but they give NO information about it....................that's as frustrating as getting the munchies at a Weight Watchers meeting...............

I think it is the same one, and I think it is the same seller - but the page configuration is different...............how odd.

 

I posted a message above that I accidentally made look like it's just a quote so it's probably not getting read. I found pics of several of these things online that look pretty much the same as mine. Two were said to be 19th century but this one is claiming to be 17th century or Elizabethan!

Whether it's really that old I don't know; but I actually think mine has a better patina...

 

It seems remarkably small. Does the history of cheesemaking include tiny cheeses?
