Is this brooch 19th century? Has a tube hinge and a curly “C” catch. Measures about 1” across and weighs a hefty 10 grams.

First time I have seen a piece of coral glued onto a peg.

    It's beautiful. Retro period, 1930's-50's?
By process of elimination--it doesn't look Victorian, Nouveau, Deco or Edwardian.

Is that a piece of conch shell rather than coral? I'm not seeing coral.

I think your pin dates to early 1900s.
I don't see a mark, so possibly rolled gold, or even 9 or 10K, as they didn't mark the lower carats.

That was the way those "button" or ball pieces were set then, even pearls (the glue was a mix of plaster and animal hide glue)!

This C clasp with what I call "anti pin poke" shape is consistent with the early 1900 era:)

Lovely brooch, anund, the coral is perfectly accentuated by the gold.
And used a lot in Russia, which is usually the first place I look for an origin with those curly C-clasps. They also used that tube hinge a bit longer than most other countries, so early 1900s sounds right.
In those days many Russian jewellery makers were still of German descent (they were kicked out later), and the design is related to late German Jugendstil, imo.

Yup, hinge and clasp are spot on for late 19th/early 20th. I've had jewellery which has lost the stone from its peg sometimes.

I wanted to say the same thing. I know pearls are set that way, just wasn't sure about possible coral or other stones.

It is unusual and beautiful. I agree with early 1900s. Just the weight you mentioned implies it is a nicer piece, you can see how well made.

Can't comment on the center stone, not sure.

Thank you all for the great responses. It’s definitely coral and tested today at 10k. My first instinct was jugendstil, thanks for your opinion on that @Any Jewelry.
I got it for $1.99 along with a silver bird fetish necklace and a Portuguese filigree brooch for another $1.99 each.

Just bumping this thread because back in March I had jeweler near the shop I’m in test it and he came back with a 10k result. I wasn’t present when it was tested and today I tested it with acid I bought recently, it’s actually 14k or a little better. Left side is 18k, right side is 14k acid.
So, I know it’s not uncommon for lower karat gold to be unmarked, what about 14k?

It might be nothing, but I think I see something right under the hinge in the second photo.

    Beautiful little pin!!!:happy::happy:
