I'd say ... close enough. I've been having daydreams of finding a PoL necklace when the GoodWill reopens and that they won't have a clue what it is.

Bubbles?

 

Inversion is caused by total internal refraction. The material doesn't matter. Siam silver isn't jappaned, it's Niello.

 

Gorgeous, Marko. Yes, I think they are pools of light, probably with japanned silver. As you explained, the orbs aren't grooved, which is a good sign.
The photo in the garden would work perfectly as a poster.

I had a pools of light necklace with thin silver wire wrapped around each orb like this one and yes, there was a slight groove the wire was set into. I think it has to be there or the wire would slip off.

Marko said she verified rock crystal with her gem tester, no other test is necessary.

I agree the upside down thing is a function of the shape, not the material. It has become a popular test for rock crystal, just like "if it doesn't attract a magnet it must be silver". Both are inacurate!

 

They do show inversion. Played with them today. I do know glass can show inversion, too. Thank you all for your help. Japanned silver didn't dawn on me.

 

I'm not suggesting they aren't rock crystal.

But if you're out and about and unsure if something is rock crystal, bubbles would be a sure sign they're glass.

Much like the tooth test some of us use for quick ID of authentic pearl nacre.

 

Quartz can have gas and water bubbles.

 

OK Hollyblue-here I go again but I’d rather question and gain new info than just let statements slide. I know nothing about quartz bubbles other than I know that quartz can have imperfections (including bubbles doesn’t surprise me), but I do know quite a bit about art glass and glass bubbles are round and regular. That can’t be true of quartz bubbles...can it? I would think the presence of perfectly round bubbles will always indicate glass.

TY so much for taking the time. Really appreciate it. I can see them clearly and they’re definitely bubbles but they look nothing like glass bubbles.

 

I would think an authentic POL piece of jewelry would be made with the best, clearest crystal.

Just suggesting a way to quickly rule out glass beads (nice marbles).
