Found this at my local Goodwill a couple of days ago. The first photo id the painting that was showing, along with the artist"s card attached to the back of the frame. The frame was in very bad shape so i decided to remove the painting and found that it is a double sided painting. The strange thing is the second painting is by a different artist and is dated 2 years later than the original.

The first painting was done by Teresa M. Devito (1920-2014). Here is some info on her.

Was wondering if anyone might know the who the second artist is. And what would be the best way to market this piece for sale. I have never dealt with something like this before.

I have not been able to find any sold pieces of Devito artwork, so I really have no idea where to start with this piece.

Wow, I feel like an idiot. I just realized that the second painting is signed 1959 Exhibit. So it must have been a show piece, but done by the same artist. Would still like to know if anyone has ever heard of any pieces by this artist having been sold. Thanks

If you correlate the dates on the pieces with the dates in her obituary, you'll see those are both student pieces. Beyond her family, not sure how much interest they would garner on the market.

Painting on both sides of a sheet of watercolor paper is not that uncommon. The paper is fairly costly and when you are practicing, or do a sub-par piece, you just flip it over and start again.

    Been there, done that...

In terms of selling these, there really isn't any value, unfortunately. They're just hobbyist pieces and they could very well have been submitted to the local county fair's art competition.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

If the top image is labeled “Falling Objects”, I’m wondering if it might posted upside-down??? Whatever those small round objects in it are, as posted, it looks more like they are falling UP...... to me!!!!

Edit.......unless they’re supposed to be spoons..........!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

She graduated from college at age 40 with a degree in art education. After that she was a teacher for many years. The obit says she was a prolific painter, and I'll assume the painting habit predated getting the degree. The one that says "exhibit" on it was most likely a sketch for a different painting. It seems incomplete for an exhibit, besides being on the back of anothe psinting on watercolor paper. So it was not the exhibited piece.

    Hi Josh,
Guess what? I have in my home around 10-12 pieces by Teresa Devito. I found them at a thrift shop in Lancaster County, PA a couple years ago. I wanted to keep the collection together so I bought them all. Some of them are quite good and I have them displayed around my home. A few are not so great so they are in the basement. :)
