Hello Board Friends! I don't know where to start researching this plate. It measures 10 1/8" across. The mold is a bit strange is there is an inner rim about 1" in and then a second, much shallower rim, about another 1" in. I would have thought Chinese or Japanese but the mark uses Western numbers. It's also not like any Asian mark I've ever seen. Orientalist? I don't think it's porcelain but rather an earthenware. I would appreciate any guidance you can provide. Thank you.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

No idea, but... thanks for the new vocabulary word... "Orientalist".
I'll make a point of using it soon.

Gaudy Dutch (or Gaudy Welsh), and I think, English.

It looks like it might be an underplate for a tureen or teapot?

Sorry, I should have mentioned I have seven of these puppies so I assumed they were plates. Perhaps chargers? They also might function as a very shallow bowl. Most perplexing.

Gaudy Welsh is the one with the gold highlights. Gaudy Dutch doesn't have gold

    Don -
Is this deep enough to be a rim soup?

Thanks for the help everyone! Upon reflection I don't think it could really function as a rim soup, cluttered - it's just a little too shallow. You would have to use as if you were sipping from a tea saucer which would not be practical given the size. I suppose a spoon with a really shallow bowl might work.

I should have recognized gaudy dutch or welsh but when I think of gaudy dutch or welsh I think more a flow blue type effect and with not such a large amount of pink. Clearly I need to expand my definitions! You folks are the best!

Don I spent a lot of time looking at patterns last night.

I keep coming back to that mark, and the way the back of the plate shines. It sort of reminds me of some of the reproduced Chinese plates.
Are any of the plates crazed? Are all the plates' rim bottoms as clean as this one.
Is there any chance that these are new?

Oh, yes, there's a chance they are new or at least recent. There is no crazing on any of the plates and the bottoms all look pretty much the same. One plate only has the number 106 on the back top rim. There are little numbers in red here and there on the back that look like they might be decorator marks. There is some wear to the front of the plates. Mostly small scratches and faded gold - I'd say it was storage wear. There are some manufacturer flaws - little bumps and pits, droplets of paint here and there. For what it's worth I'm not getting either and English or Dutch vibe from these although I can't really say why. I'm sure I bought these at auction but I can't quite remember which one or when. Thanks for spending so much time on this.

I was actually having a good time looking. It's a way to chill out before turning in at night.

I give up. I can't resist the temptation any longer. I have stared at the mark on that plate for what amounts to five hours on and off. If I saw that mark staring at me from within the glass case of a museum I would have no doubt or trepidation in declaring that this piece probably dates to the late 1700's to early 1800's. The stylized Crown logo likely originated in one of three possible locations, all in Italy; Naples, Genoa or Savona. I know that somewhere I have seen a mark very, very, close to the one on this plate.
I have an extensive library of books on the subject of Italian pottery, published as early as 1820. All these reference materials shown logos of a similar nature. I have spent four decades collecting, studying and writing about Italian ceramics. My assumption about this mark is pure conjecture based on a gut reaction. It will take someone with far more knowledge than I possess to confirm or disavow my opinion.
The decoration on the plate is based on the Imari wares being imported to Europe.

Thank you, Walter. The mark reminds me a bit of a bishop's hat. Would it help if I sent one over to you?

Yup, Imari pallette rather than any of the Gaudy stuff. I've not seen that mark and I don't think they're British. Gut feel is relatively modern Japanese.

Thanks, everyone. It's turning out to be quite the mystery. Walter has kindly agreed to assist me. I will be sending off a plate to Walter within the next few weeks. Will, of course, update this page with whatever he does (or does not) find out.
