Recently took over the family home. Built in 1878, I'm repairing, restoring, re-modeling, re-furnishing. This armoire on the third floor takes up a lot of room. It's a little less than 6 feet high, about 3.5 feet wide, and roughly 2 feet deep, a very heavy piece of furniture. There are no repairs although someone in the family at one time painted it white with gold antiquing. It's one of many pieces I'll be posting looking for similar help in deciding whether to store it in the full attic, sell it locally, or donate it, if it's of nominal value. There's 4 floors and 2 basements full of 140+ years of family hording to contend with. Thank you for any help forthcoming.

Can't help much, but I can sympathize - I went through the same thing three decades ago and am STILL dealing with "stuff".

    Welcome & Good Luck!!!

30s-40s waterfall style Chiffarobe. This was not particularly well made furniture when new and value is nominal. That said, it is probably worth a hundred or so to the right person to use for the good storage it provides. You might see it priced up to $300.00 in a nice shop with a more attractive paint job. I might add that values are regional so values I give for my semi-rural Midwest location may not apply to yours.

Thank you for encouragement. It's endless. A total of 19 rooms. There's even a sub-basement that has stuff stored in it that I can't even begin to guess how they got it down there! I think it was originally dug out from under the foundation basement as a tunnel to the barn that was converted to a house in 1925. Some of the walls I've already gone over with those beautiful Victorian 2' X 2' PVC tiles had a dozen layers of paint and different wallpaper from different eras on them. I was going to strip the walls, plaster and paint/ornate and I just decided to go with various Victorian motif PVC material, the difference between taking months to do each room's walls and ceilings or a week and then move on to the next without making it a "life-work". Now I'm at the point that I have to move things around, store them up or down, or donate/sell to make room to progress.

I agree on the paint. Real "horror-show" as they said in "Clockwork Orange". That's what it's being used for now. One draw for tools, one for papers, one for electrical wires, etc. Sounds to me like $100 piece for Craigslist, they provide the muscle. Thank you so much for your expertise, it's very appreciated, I'll be back for more of it.

The oval loops on the drawer pulls may be bakelite, if they test for that, it may be a good thing to mention in CL.

If you like dust, my attic is the place for you. It's a full, unfinished attic the full length and width of the house, with a 10 foot ceiling at the apex but halfway up the steep stairs, I start sneezing! At some point I'll get a professional to clean up there thoroughly. If I start in with the cleaning up there, I know there will be a lot of infiltration of dirt and dust that will coalesce down to the floors below. I keep the windows shut up there so there's no wind blowing it around and down. On a positive note, my mother was also a pack rat, like the rest of the family. All my Lionels, toys, games, Halloween costumes, etc. are up there in boxes, nothing was thrown out, so it's like a time machine every time I go up there.

Good call Sandra, you may be right.

Yes. Amber colored bakelite rings set within the metal handles. They're probably original to the piece, the same ones I always saw on it from my early childhood (1960s).

Another one. Shows up in a family photo from about 1936, if that helps. The center is a hinged door and what seems to be an extra draw added to the top is attached, part of the whole. The whole bedroom set is here for this chest of drawers. A low table with a huge mirror, another set of drawers with another mirror, a night table, etc., etc., the pieces are fairly much scattered in different areas.

20s-30s traditional revival furniture. Seems to be better quality than some we see with all the different woods used. Condition is a bit of an issue but have seen much worse sell. Not terribly valuable. Would depend on how many pieces and configuration of the set. Most such sets are under $1000.00 here in the US at retail and considerably less at auction here in the Midwest. Might do better in top-notch condition and/or in more metro areas.
