Someone has used that vase as a pellet or BB gun target, notice the round marks in the bottom of each dent. There should be one or two glancing shots as well.

They are all confined to the bottom couple inches and go all the way round. Sharper than a .177.

Got a reply from the KU geology department today. They said -

The 1940 refers to the G-Hawker logo that was used, and the year that it was trademarked. The AWG does stand for Association for Women in Geoscience. My guess is that AWG made these as fundraising items. Pretty neat you were able to find one!

My emails to them will continue I am hoping. The KU geology department is in active current involvement with the AWG it seems. Now I know that the date refers to when the drawing was trademarked and I know the AWG does stand for Association of Women Geoscientists.

But I heard it here first!

    Thank you for that.

Way cool. I love tracking down those puzzles too. It can be even more fun when you repatriate some oddity or another.

Obviously not as old as I thought (from 1940) but I am still pleased with my purchase after the geology departments email. Has to be after 1977 since thats when the AWG was founded. So I learned a lot from thier single email. I was a bit surprised to hear from them so soon (I sent a link to the ebay auction in my email to them so they could look at the item) - but I discretely mentioned I was a KU alumni and I think that helped.

I wrote something like - "I am a KU alumni" - and thats about as discrete as I can get.

You all might want to pull up a chair, cause this is my story on two paintings I have. The first one I purchased at an antique store for around $30. It was a ship on it's launching day. What got me about it, was that it had our patriotic colors draped over the front. The ship had a hull number, 1230. It was signed W.F Robinson. I got home and tried to find some info. on this artist but was striking out. All I was coming up with on the internet was a W.F Robinson who wrote some gangster books back in the 30 or so. I pretty much gave up on looking anymore. I did find out that the ship painting was of the Liberty Ship, Francis Preston Blair on it's launching day, that was confirmed by the Navy Museum. A year later or so, I was at a flea market and seen this well framed original oil painting of a landscape. I looked on the back and what do you know, the name, Warren F. Robinson. The hand writing and writing of the date match perfectly. I paid $10 for that painting. On the reverse, it also stated where the painting was done, Athens, GA, home of UGA. I sent some emails to the Arts Museum at UGA but they never got back with me. I had posted a blog somewhere and about a month later, I received an email from a lady that had a water color painting from the same artist. We both searched and searched for info. Again, we were only coming up with that dang author again. Eventually, we did find what we were looking for. He had graduated UGA with a BA in Fine Arts. He went on to teaching as a professor at different colleges. He held Head of Art Department positions at various colleges. His last position was at Gettysburg College as Head of Fine Arts Department. He passed away in his early 40s. We found out that he had many private art shows, his works are in many museums and private collections. To name one museum, The Smithsonian. He is in the Who of Who of the East in arts. He has a lot of creditials. The way we found out about that info, well, it was that dang author we couldn't shake. Yes, he was an author too. There was a link stating that he taught at Gettysburg, on old newspapers online about his death at Gettysburg, that's how we found his BA from Athens, GA. It was a long process to find this all out but it gave my paintings a face and undoubtly a higher value. I love researching info, sometimes. These two paintings were done when he was still in college. image.jpg image.jpg

These two pins/brooches were sold as "costume jewelry". The top piece was $3 and the bottom $5. :D

The first is 18KT gold with pearls, probably dating to the late-19th or early-20th C. No maker's mark.

The second is platinum, 14KT gold, sapphires and pearls, made by: Bippart, Griscom & Osborn of Newark, NJ. Probably dating to the same as above. The maker's mark (flaming torch) on clasp was pretty easy to ID with a quick search.

Not sure what the gold weight is as of yet. I most likely will not scrap these.

Way too pretty to scrap, Nuff, and it always amazes me that people don't check to see if something is real gold...

    LOL it will bite ya
bit me about 30 years ago and until the last few years I hardly looked at anything else. Still never pass it up. I would type in craigs list add searching only for sales listing jewelry. I don't do that anymore and make most of our mula from it. I have changed my habits just a bit

I don't think you can get over it LOL
First sale I went to today looked like it should have jewelry. I was about to walk out and she said the magic words. Any thing in particular your looking for. I said yeah I want a 10k heart pendant for 50 cents and a nice little 14k gold chain for 50 cents she said ok and went in and got them lol

Nice pieces, Nuff - the missing pearls shouldn't be much of an issue, they're fairly easy to replace. Your crescent brooch is shown in the Newark Museum's 'The Glitter & The Gold' (1997), plate 168, dated as 1890-1910, but the form was still popular well into the '20s. Thought the crown watch pin might be a Newark piece too, but didn't find it in the book, it does likely date to the same period as the crescent - suppose you've seen this 14k near twin to your piece, also no maker's mark: http://www.perfectjewels.net/archives17.html (about 3/4 way down on left)

Some nice finds! Nuff those are beautiful pieces of jewellery!
I picked up some goodies, snuff box that I think is tortoise shell over wood, sterling pill box - 1915 Chester, nice old tile, keeping this one, pair of brackets for what I don't know, seem to have age to them, and this little sampler? piece that I'll have to start a thread about.
